What To Expect

Hampton Court Palace

Enjoy this half day tour, which has been fully customised to meet the needs of families with children, and explore the famous former residence of the notorious King Henry VIII.

You will meet the guide at Waterloo station in London, and together you will travel to Hampton Court Palace on a train ride lasting approximately 45 minutes.

Hampton Court Palace is a royal palace in the borough of Richmond upon Thames, 12 miles (19.3 kilometers) south west and upstream of central London.

It is one of the King’s two remaining palaces and one of the grandest royal residences in England. Hampton Court Palace stands on the banks of the river Thames, a seamless blend of Tudor and Baroque architecture. The palace is centered around three courtyards – Base Court, Clock Court and Fountain Court. There are many attractions to see at this incredibly beautiful palace, both indoors and outside.

Your guide will bring history to life and entertain children with fascinating stories about the lives of kings and queens as you explore the rooms where Henry VIII's marriages changed the course of history. You will also discover evocative old corridors, still said to be haunted by Tudor ghosts.
To enter the Hampton Court Palace you will walk across a short bridge and you will reach the Great Gatehouse with its magnificent ceiling featuring the Royal Arms, used by English Sovereigns since 1837.

Your will also walk through an area called the Clock Court where you will see the famous Astronomical Clock. Installed in 1540 (although there were earlier clocks at the palace), not only does it show the hour, the day and the month, it also shows the phases of the moon and its age in the month, the signs of the zodiac, the movement of the sun (according to pre-Copernican theory), and, most usefully for the members of the court, who usually travelled by barge, the time of high tide at London Bridge.

One of the highlights of the tour is the Great Hall, England's last and greatest medieval hall, the place where royalty dined with courtiers, entertained dignitaries and celebrated until the early hours of the morning underneath the magnificent hammer-beam ceiling. You will admire the fascinating tapestries depicting scenes from the life of Abraham from the Book of Genesis, and if you cast your eyes upwards you will be amazed by the extravagantly decorated hammer-beam roof soaring to a height of 60 feet.

Another faschinating place in Hampton Court is the Tudor Kitchens, where grooms and pages worked to produce over 800 meals a day for the hungry household of Henry VIII. The various areas of the kitchens have curious sounding names, such as: the Boiling House, the Fish Court, the Great Kitchens, the Dressers, the Serving Place and North Cloister and the Cellars.

There are many more fascinating places to see at Hampton Court Palace, and with your guide you will be able to enjoy the idyllic greenery of the Palace's famous gardens, featuring 60 acres of formal gardens, 750 acres of parkland and all manner of wildlife. The perfect ending to a fabulous tour.
