Overview

Dover Castle may, quite rightly, be regarded as the castle of castles, having defended the gateway to Britain for over a thousand years: From the Romans, through the medieval and Tudor eras and, of course, during the Second World War.

The castle holds a certain mystique today. You’ll find its transformation over the centuries is impressive bearing in mind the outer defences and various tunnels that were built to strengthen its defences.

As a local guide in Kent, walk with me in the footsteps of great English leaders and knights whilst enjoying the magnificent views of Dover and The English Channel.

During the Spring and Summer months, additional private tours may be booked such as The White Cliffs of Dover, Canterbury or an alternative historic location in Kent. Please enquire at least one week in advance of your visit.

N.B. Due to the pandemic-related restrictions, some parts of Dover Castle, such as the tunnels, may be closed due to health and safety reasons.

Highlight of our trip!

My husband and I had a wonderful day out with John as our guide for Dover Castle and the white cliffs of Dover. He kept in constant contact in helping us reach a different train station for the day due to the ongoing rail strikes. Not being familiar with the rail lines in London this made a huge difference. We were worried about getting lost but it all worked out and he was prompt in meeting us at the train station. Due to the rain forecast for later that day he was flexible in going to the white cliffs first so we could see before the clouds rolled in. We got some amazing pictures and could even see a bit of France!

We then visited Dover castle and John was wonderful in guiding us around the huge grounds. He gave us a lot of back information about past things that had happened there and made the day interesting and fun. Next time we are in England we hope to have John as our tour guide again as we had a great day and will never forget it.

Excellent tour with John

My father and I took a day tour with John this past weekend to Dover Castle. What an excellent day. John is friendly, easy going, informative and generally just a really pleasant person to be around. Even faced with two self described "history buffs", we learned a lot from John. Also really appreciated how willing he was to tailor the experience. Despite the very stormy weather, John took as to all the fascinating nooks and crannies of the castle as requested, but was always cognizant of whether we needed a break or a bite to eat. The vehicle down was comfortable and roomy, and while John meets you slightly outside of central London, his directions are easy to follow and it saves you more than an hour of sitting in traffic. All in all, a truly excellent value for a private tour. Highly, highly recommend!

This was an amazing day for us! I highly recommend this tour - John is a fantastic guide. He is extremely knowledgeable about the area and an absolute pleasure to spend time with. We are a family of 4 with 2 teenagers and did the Dover castle tour with a visit to the White Cliffs. Whether you're interested in medieval history or more recent WWII history, this tour has it all - a fascinating place to see with one of the best tour guides we've ever experienced. We feel like we made a new friend with John and would absolutely book another tour with him the next time we're back in the area!
