The castle has grown from a fortification in the 11th century into a palace complex and UNESCO World Heritage Site over the following centuries. The castle stands on the site of a Roman fort, which was destroyed by King Henry I. The castle is enclosed by walls up to high and wide, with turrets at intervals along them, and is irregular in shape because it consists of different periods of building with parts dating back to Norman times and others more recent.

The moated manor house is a series of courtyards, cloisters, and gardens surrounding a tree-covered courtyard. The house was originally built in the 13th century, with later additions and alterations by successive owners. The Tudor mansion was restored after a fire in 1997-98.
