Overview

Step off the well-trodden tourist path and into the secret gardens and hidden corners of the City's ancient 'square mile'. We'll see beautiful gardens old and new: from the 16th-floor roof garden with stunning views of Tower Bridge and the Shard to the City's most atmospheric garden in the ruins of a 17th Century church. You'll hear the fascinating history of these locations and how they were shaped by fire, war, and plague.

Your guide, Alison Turner, is a qualified guide and keen amateur gardener who knows her hollyhocks from her heuchera...(she once produced a BBC series on Italian Gardens with Monty Don!)

All Hallows By The Tower
The City's oldest church, bursting with history. The earliest recorded church here dates from 675AD! Inside we'll see a Saxon arch and remains of a Roman pavement. It's also where William Penn was baptized and where US president John Quincy Adams married a local girl. There's a sunken garden and we'll also peek into Nic's Secret Garden - a tiny unused space beside the Church bursting with plants.

Touring with the City's Troublesome Women

Fantastic, fun and fascinating guided walk. Really enjoyed this. Alison is an erudite, entertaining and inclusive guide. I would recommend Troublesome Woman, and any of her walks. I shall definitely be back for more.

Alison gave us a superb mixture of erudition and humour. I felt I'd really learned something new about London, though have lived here all my life, and the tour is well-named -- there really were secret gardens on the trail.
An excellent and interesting tour of the secret city gardens

Alison Turner is a great City of London tour guide.. her tour of the Secret Gardens of the City was a delight to experience. It ranged from the ultra modern roof garden of 120 Fenchurch Street, where there were brilliant up-close views of the cluster of city skyscrapers, to the ruin of St Dunstan’s in the East & Samuel Pepys church & garden of St Olave’s in Seething Lane. Throughout the guided tour Alison was knowledgeable, engaging, relaxed and witty. She shared with us colourful anecdotes about historical figures connected with the gardens and historic buildings. You are in for a treat. Enjoy.
Secret London Gardens Walk

Alison is very friendly and well-informed and has a clear carrying voice which is very handy in noisy London! My husband and I have lived in London for decades and think we know it all but Alison always has something new and interesting to show both old hands and new. We loved the rooftop gardens and the relaxing pub chat at the finish.
