A taste of Spitalfields life
alisonf774, 15-11-2022
A wonderful way to spend a couple of hours in Spitalfields, learning about its rich history and remarkable residents from a tour guide who lives and breathes Spitalfields life. Finishing the tour in an 18th-century town house, with refreshments and the opportunity to chat to the Gentle Author, was the icing on the cake.

A truly unique and unforgettable experience, which immerses you in the people and stories of one of London's most interesting communities. The Gentle Author is the perfect guide to this exploration of the lives and stories of Spitalfields.

If you are looking for an east end walk, do this one. The atmosphere created by the gentle author and his vast knowledge and passion are outstanding, the very welcome tea and cake at the end of the walk is totally unique, an experience I won't ever forget.
Illuminating and uplifting walking tour

Focusing on the extraordinary lives of the ordinary people who have lived here over centuries, The Gentle Author's tour offers an uplifting alternative to the 'Ripper' tours that have sadly dominated in this part of London. Full of fascinating detail and human stories, the layers of social history and multiculturalism are brought to life in an engaging 2 hour tour, delivered by a hugely knowledgable and compassionate guide. Recommended for Londoners and tourists alike!
A breathless potted history of a unique place

Loved it as I knew I would! Idiosyncratic, spanning centuries and consequently taking in swathes of history yet alighting on the smallest detail, describing the movement of peoples yet beaming in on the individuals who 'made' and make up this hugely diverse, anarchic and ever-changing confusion of streets beyond the City walls. I loved the momentum of it - the way GA would dart off, as elusive as a fingersmith, willing us on to the Next Thing....There was no prediction as to what that would be, except it was unfailingly hugely entertaining, personal and illuminating. He took in so much history, ancient, modern, cultural, social, political, I need to go back at a slower pace to consolidate and digest what I learned. Hurrah for the Gentle Author! One of a kind.....
